2. Photograph A is the 9mm Australian Owen submachine gun. Also known as the Owen machine carbine. Arguably the best submachine gun produced during the Second World War. Its introduction to the Australian Army was initially delayed by opposition, and deliberate obstruction, from pissant, shiny arsed, seat warming, Army bureaucrats in Canberra. An excellent weapon in the heat, humidity, and mud of a tropical rainforest environment (Second World War, the Malayan Emergency, and in early deployments to the Republic of Vietnam), as well as the cold, rain, snow, and the dust/mud of a colder climate (Korea). In my opinion this weapon was superior to the Sten (did not handle a tropical environment at all well), the Sterling, and the Carl Gustav M/45 (Swedish K). Unfortunately, whilst I would have preferred the Own gun, none available so I opted for the Sterling. The other problem with the Own for our kind of work was that there was never a suppressed version developed. However, had any been available, I am sure our armourers could have come up with something.

4. LA firefighters – but they WERE promoted because of experience and merit…in the LALAland’s alphabet soup’s alternate universe. In the real world, not so much.

5. Fire Chiefs: I have served under several different ones, some good, one really bad. The bad one was a perpetual brown-noser with an inflated ego. I’m sure everyone here knows the type, anything bad was always someone else’s fault.
   The position has always been political. Very rarely does anyone get into the office without connections, but in the past competency always outweighed politics. Now it’s all about ‘box checking’ for DEI.
   As an aside, for years the Fire Service has focused too much on promoting Managers instead of Leaders.

There is a book that I’m reading at the moment (and I’ve read hundreds at least) called, “A History of the Bible: The Book and its Faiths” by John Barton. It’s heavy on data and light on dogma.

         So the general interpretation of this story is that the three social classes (thrall or bondsman, karl or free yeoman, and jarl or noble) are divinely ordained. I reject this. That’s not the point of the Rigsthula. Heimdall didn’t meet three couples on a single trip at about the same time. He met these couples across the centuries. Why else are they called Great-grands, Grands, and finally Father and Mother? The point is that humanity was uplifted across the aeons. More to the point, each of us has within him a spark of the divine, thanks to Heimdall’s gift. The Gods are not ineffably above us, to be worshiped out of terror. Rather, we are bound to them, and they to us, by ties of blood. Are we their juniors? Yes, of course. But we have something to contribute: our labor has value, our oaths carry weight, even with our Elder Kin. If not so, then why would Odin gather human warriors to aid the Gods at the great battle at the end of all things?

         Obviously my interpretation of Rígsþula is not unique. It’s not as if I came up with it. But it’s a minority opinion, to be sure. So that’s my best shot at a doctrinal war.

    1. We will not tolerate ophidiophobia in any of its forms on VM – or Islamophobia, which is closely related, obviously. Then there is lesbophobia, which is a type of homophobia that combines sexism and prejudice. Which launches me into a war story from my uniform police days. I was on routine patrol – City of Anaheim, CA Area 14 one fine Spring morning when I received a radio call – medical aid, Station 66 (Anaheim Fire Dept) and Southland Ambulance en route. The call in the older part of town off Lemon Street. Upon arrival I heard screaming coming from a residence. Being the keen trained observer, I matched the screams to the address of the dispatched call, drew my handgun and given the exegent circumstances, opened the screen door (without waiting for backup). I saw two naked women, both covered in blood. There was blood everywhere. Because this is a family blog, I’ll cut to the chase. Two women were experimenting sexually with a python and had inserted it into the ladyparts of one of the women. The python (obviously confused) latched onto the internal part and in trying to extract it, the other woman caused a HEAVY flow of blood. The snake refused to disengage.

       So there I stand, handgun not yet holstered, looking at the abattoir, trying to figure out what to do. Fortunately for me, the fire department (heroic as ever) arrived at that time and took control of the scene.

       There was a large insurance policy wherein the non-penetrated lesbian was the beneficiary. So was it a homicide or an accidental death (the penetrated lesbo bled out)? That’s why there were detectives. I told the sergeant what I’d seen – he arrived on the heels of the fire department. Then I went 10-19 to swap out my uniform, blood splattered from the snake’s writhing that flicked it everywhere, and went 10-8 to serve out the remainder of my shift and write my report.

          2. The Fire Department cut it in half to kill it. The snake then unclenched and they withdrew it. They put those leg cuffs on her to compensate for the loss of blood and put in IVs once the snake shuffled off its mortal coil (pun intended) but it was too late.

14. The rebuilding regulations, and costs, will have even some the more wealthy defeated on rebuilding and a huge opportunity for those so wealthy the extra costs don’t mean anything. They’ll have larger estates, less neighbors and continue their support for those that allowed this opportunity. It’s the way things are, and unless enough citizens are willing to shoot their way back into power, the state is guaranteed destruction. The laws of the common people were negated years ago, and justice is only for those that can pay for what is most to their advantage.

    MACAQUES, I started fishing around back when Glenn Beck did a documentary on a residential development north of Houston selling property to illegal aliens.     1. The font sort of is what it is at my end with WordPress software. I could use caption rather than text to make it larger but the people who access the blog on cell phones would be most unhappy.

    2. For bigger font:
       In Windows browser try typing [Control] ++ (actually you just hit the +/= key while holding down CTRL, you don’t need to also hold down SHIFT).
       On Mac it’s the quadrefoil key (whatever it’s called) instead of CTRL.

    3. Some time ago I mentioned the difficulty I had in reading the screen to one of the other blogs I read on a daily basis;
       the writeer agreed and found a way to change the font color and intensity to a easy to read very dark violet

       1. The font is a bit light in the sandals (that should get a reaction).
          I’ve found that if you select all the text, it becomes white on blue with high contrast.

19. LA Fires.
    How many businesses won’t open next week because their workers are scrambling to survive? Can we guess the long term financial impact this will have on our entire economy?

    1. The long term impact of all four fires will be significant. Yes, things will be rebuilt, the insurance coffers will be strained and people will go back to work. Unemployment insurance (State Fund) will likewise be stretched and it’s inevitable that the already highest taxes in the nation will be raised to cover it within the state. More people will leave California – likely to Colorado – now touted as a Mecca for the displaced. Where in the mountain west can you find people as woke? And they’ll come with insurance money in their pockets to puff the local economy.
