Slightly off topic – A discussion of the problem of ho-flation. I never looked at it this way, but sure.

Fake vs Real

There have been discussions of potential supervolcano explosions in Italy (h/t Claudio) and at the Yellowstone hotspot. There hasn’t been a supervolcano explosion during recorded human history. They’re rare. It doesn’t mean they won’t happen (in geologic time). The result of a caldera going critical will wipe out a large section of the Earth’s surface as we understand those eruptions. The last one was in New Zealand. 25.600 years ago. Mt. St. Helens, WA, is a stratovolcano, not a supervolcano. There is a BIG difference between the two. The volume of deposits for such an eruption is greater than 1,000 cubic kilometers (240 cubic miles). The volcanic ash (tuff) is filled with tiny slivers of glass. When you breathe it in, it tears your lungs up, and you choke to death on your own blood.

Supervolcanos have NOTHING to do with the climate. They occur naturally when the value of silica in the magma is great enough to create them. They don’t erupt as a shield volcano (Hawaii/Iceland) or a stratovolcano (Mt. St. Helens) does, damaging local areas. The May 18, 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens in Skamania County, Washington, produced about 0.3 cubic miles (1.3 cubic kilometers) of volcanic ash before it was compacted by rain. The smallest supervolcano eruption, by definition, would be 1000 times the size.

The Most Destroyed Tank in History?

From June 1941 until October 1941, Germans captured or destroyed approximately 1500 T-34s and did not mention the tank specifically. It was not until late October when the Germans were starting to fail at achieving their objectives that the German Generals began mentioning the T-34 as a specific problem, they were using it as an excuse for their recent failures.

The Red Army, in testing, found the following problems with the T-34.

  1. Driver’s hatch compromises front hull armor integrity. The driver’s hatch could be detached by rounds that were incapable of penetrating the T-34.

2. The gunsight for the T-34 is not suitable for the tank.

3. The turret is too small and cramped inside.

4. The ammo rack is poorly designed and unusable

5. Because of the poorly designed ammo rack and the cramped turret, the nominal rate of fire of the 76mm gun of 5 rounds per minute cannot be achieved, and the actual rate of fire is 2 rounds per minute.

6. The transmission is of poor design and fails far too soon and frequently. Because of the bad design, it is impossible for the driver to change gears to the 4th gear EXCEPT on smooth, hard surfaces. This limits the tank to 15kph cross-country

7. The tracks’ construction is too light and made of low-quality metal, making them prone to breaking.

8. The weld quality is poor and not uniform. The welds cracked when the side of the turret was struck with one 76mm HE round. The welds failed catastrophically, and the turret came apart when a second 76 mm HE round struck the side of the turret.

9. The armor is prone to spalling when struck by AP rounds that are incapable of penetrating the frontal or turret armor of the tank. This results in crew injuries or damage to internal components of the tank

10. The electric turret traverse is unreliable and prone to shorting out and sparking during normal use.

The Russians made a lot of them, and the Red Army did not overly concern itself with casualties due to combat, sickness, exhaustion, frigid weather, or starvation.

  1. My father was quoted unfavourably in one of my school text books in 10th grade. Written by very left wing pair of teachers and taught by left wing nut case. After bashing him for a while he looked at the surnames and asked if he was a relative? My very short reply was “My father”.
    Made for an interesting semester.

I know what you mean by events, I am named in two history books and have been lectured about the events by someone 20 plus years younger not even born at the time.

Coincidentally we are currently on a few days off at a holiday resort town my family built from bare ground in the 1960’s with streets, parks etc named after people who did the work for us and no one I have spoken to knows who any of them are. First time here in 21 years.
(Place I was once in major brawl is now upmarket bar)

    1. You mention gentrification, and it’s a real thing. I recently visited a spot in Placentia, Orange, California, on a visit to the worker’s paradise. It was once a dive bar frequented by people I knew. When I say “dive,” it fits the bill in all respects—old picnic-style bench tables, etc. The Mexican food there was outstanding, and the grandma made wonderful tamales at Christmas, but I digress. The neighborhood had been cleaned up. The dive bar was now a hipster bar. The food was still good, but the atmosphere was ‘all wrong.’ The chance of getting in a brawl there was something close to zero. They ruined the place.

  2. * I kept looking at her face and something seemed to be off, made it look “crook’ . ed”, and it finally occurred to me that the center of the diastema runs up her right nostril rather than being centered on the septum (this is in no way a critque of the cartoon; perhaps this is the way her face is constructed). OTOH if this is her actual facial apppearance, it may explain a lot of other things; none of us are perfectly symmetrical: some of us far less so.
    * My cousin, an AP guy for many, many years once told me , perhaps in the ’70s, that the job of a reporter/editor was not to report the news, but to make the news: ‎Marshall McLuhan still lives, perhaps even moreso

    1. I realize that you’re not talking about the bobcat family at my house, but the other breed of cat. I can’t look at her for long. I can’t listen to her for less. And yes, the media works hard to make up news out of whole cloth. I avoid them and wish a pox on them and their houses. May they have recurring covid (which they seem to enjoy) and may the fleas of a thousand camels infest their pubic areas and multiply twice daily.

  3. Film series is Rome pictured is Lucius Vorenus who was a Centurion. Titus Pulo shown as a private in the series was also a Centurion.

When I make knives they are always full tang or semi skeletonized. I might occasionally break a point but not a handle.

    1. I have no idea why anyone would want a knife, seax, sword, dagger, dirk, etc., that is less than a full tank. Semi-skeletonized is fine, too, because they’re lighter, and you take that option. Folding knives occasionally break at the hinge, but I spend money and buy them constructed robustly. A hinge break hasn’t happened in some time. Reflecting – maybe twenty years. (when you’re older, “some time” is different than when you’re twenty-five years of age).

      1. Good knives last.
I have one knife I made as a teenager and replaced the handle in my 30’s. Blade is mechanical hacksaw from where I worked part time. Used to cut 12 inch steel beams with it. Steel is so hard a file won’t touch it.

Leather sheath made by my late mother.

          1. Steve, we’ll do an expose on Veep Harris tomorrow from her days on the stroll (h/t Frank)

      2. Agreed.
I always preferred a full tang sword hilt. With rat-tail tangs the pommels always get broken off.

    1. I used to warm a bowl of milk with a freshly cracked egg. Claudio is referring to the WWM buffet that was taken over by cougars (not this kind – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KErUJUszUp0) and was thus ended. While I liked bobcats in the area thinning out the rodent population, the lions had the potential to thin ME out. I discontinued the supplement when I started seeing lion tracks and the bobcats (including Mrs. Robert & kittens) headed for the high country (a metaphor since I’m as high as you can go here). I don’t want to see the lions arriving regularly for warm milk and an egg and getting testy when it’s not produced in a timely manner.

      1. When the lions are sitting outside the slider staring in and tapping the paw, then you’ll know. Another tell tale sign would be nose prints about 24” above the deck on the glass.

  5. Whenever I hear ‘Panzerlied’ I think of the scene from The Battle of the Bulge.
Fun story: I was involved in shooting a movie trailer of a screenplay my friend wrote. Basically Dante’s Inferno in the setting of Stalingrad.
So we had a bunch of reenactors as the extras, filming in an old cement mill next to a public park. Well the Germans got bored so they broke into a rendition of Panzerlied…
Imagine taking your kids to the park on a beautiful Saturday morning and you confronted with a full platoon of Wehrmacht soldiers with weapons, stomping their boots to keep time and singing in German.
The cops only got 4 calls I believe.
Here is the end result. (And yes that is Francesco Quinn)

      1. Thanks. Keeping in mind that his budget was basically $0. Francesco Quinn was cool. He came and filmed with us the whole weekend for the union minimum, $300.

  6. ID Series-
    1. HBO series, “Rome”
POTUS and THROATUS, God help us all. The whole thing is playing out like a real-life version of the Netflix series, “House of Cards.”

    1. I’m waiting for the Democrats to start manufacturing Gott Mitt Uns belt buckles for their adoring Antifa hoards to wear

  7. Happy Warrior: I noticed that yesterday you featured a blue octopus, followed by discussion of the Falcon. Coincidence?

The entirely coincidental use of “happy warrior” by all those shills and pressitutes is obviously entirely coincidental and not the logical segue into corruption of the press. Of course it’s corrupt. It’s largely controlled by persons with numerous cluster B personality disorder traits. (Both personally and culturally.) And they PROJECT. You know how the cheating spouse is often the one to accuse the non-cheating spouse of, well, cheating? Same goes with those who continually accuse the rest of us of plotting evil against them, of wanting to put them into re-education camps, of wanting to murder them all.

    6. Is interpersonally exploitative (i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends).
    7. Lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others.
    8. Is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her. [italics mine]

    1. Between yesterday and today you have pointed out quite a few “coincidences”…I suspect this is not a coincidence.

  8. Serious fodder this morning…

Hoflation- Exactly! Mom was partner to my father, she did not compete with him, stayed independent as a person yet also feminine. Woman today have no idea they are the gatekeepers, when to many decided they to buy into “the feminine mystique” BS, usually when they entered college, the self-importance grew and they forgot this basic tenet. If you do not recognize mens inherent qualities and rely on them while keeping us “boys” in check we will never become respectful mature human beings (the proverbial “we’re all 12 year olds” inside). I want a woman partner, not a competitor.

The dufus POS “happy warrior” and his Handlers need to be concerned not with their own hubris and position, but concerned with the “unhappy” SISU MAGA Warriors out here in “flyover” country…aka. The 85%. If somehow the Empty Keds Vacuous One gets installed with this numbnutz as backup there will be an uprising, people have had enough of this s**t from these idiots being foisted onto them and their families by a bunch of idiots who wouldn’t know where the end of an EV charging cable goes where (altho I can think of a place to suggest they put it given the opportunity).

The Mentally Ill are running everything into the ground, watch the closing “ceremony” (if you dare), surprised they didn’t have Tay Tay or Ben Iver (Harris’ new fav)…which would require copious amounts of Brennivin to ward off the evil spirits.

  9. Panzerlied: The Japanese are remarkably unburdened by what has been. (And good for them, I am increasingly thinking.)

This is a world where girls’ schools compete in mechanized warfare as sport.
All well and good, but who is the loader among these 85-lb girls?

      1. They also have a series based on ‘Navy Schools’ where girls crew various historical warships.

It’s anime. Which means it’s far much more fun than American cartoons. Some of the anime are very deep emotionally. Watched one that was just frigging scary. And, yeah, lots of T and A. So?

          1. Why? Good stories, full of morals and FAFO moments, flawed characters succeeding against odds, snappy dialogs and a look into a foreign culture that I understand (I no longer understand European culture.

Some of the animation is cheesy, but some of it is rather fantastic.

Not a lot of wokism at all.

I watch it with subtitles on, so I basically am reading, volume off so I don’t have to hear the squeaky voices. I’ll put the headphones on when there’s good music (one of the anime I have watched is about a high school Koto (Japanese dulcimer) club, so to understand the piece you do have to listen, or I’ll go and find the piece they’re playing and go find the actual music being played. I like Koto music. A lot. And Japanese singing. Not Chinese, but Japanese.

    1. Russian girls…My exposure to them was with a certain class of females that hung out with the Russian Mob in the US and exported bar girls in Mexico and Asia, likewise connected to the mafia. The same is true with Bulgarians, etc., in the Balkans. Some beautiful women – but with a lack of soul. I avoided them where possible. They were all broken at a very young age, likely unrepairable even with all the king’s horses and all the king’s men involved in a repair job. Of course it was men who broke them – and women of their class helping the process along.

  10. The T-34, like most of the Russkie stuff, was pure crap. The original turret was, as noted, too small. The gun, the vaunted 76.2 mm gun, sucked. The T-34/85 that superseded an improved 3 man turreted T-34, had a gun that was as powerful as the 7.5cm gun on the later Pzkfz MkIVs.

The armor was shit. The engine ran better after about 6-8 hours of run-time, and typically didn’t last long, due to crappy manufacture, crappy maintenance, crappy steel.

Why did they succeed? Because there were so damned many of them.

The supposedly undergunned Sherman with the 75mm regular gun could easily penetrate the T-34. With the more powerful 76mm gun, really easily penetrate the T-34. And the Sherm was many much more reliable, expected to handle a 250-500 mile run with little maintenance.

Yet so many ‘historians’ list the T-34 as ‘the best tank of WWII.’ These are the same twatwaddles that complain that the Sherman was underpowered and had to use swarm tactics to defeat German Armor. Well, duh, as the Sherm was designed as an anti-infantry tank, and the attacker always had to outnumber the defender. Funny, the same experts don’t point out that the T-34 was crap and had to use swarm tactics to defeat even ‘equivalent armor.’

And, of course, when faced with an enemy tank during WWII, the US Army’s standard tactics were to use either tank destroyers, artillery or aircraft.

    1. If the Heer had the volume of trucks to infantry that the US did, it would have been a different war. They moved on on foot and were resupplied by wagon or vulnerable rail up to the end. Of course, so did the Russians. Lend-lease wheels wouldn’t get you through the rasputitsa. The Germans did very well for themselves, all things considered, but they over-extended. If Hitler had satisfied himself with Austria and the Sudatenland, worked on building a functional hydrogen bomb (during peacetime), and left the Jews alone, he could have gone farther as a Futher. On the way up, he shackled himself to Ernst Rohm and his Sturmabteilung (SA) and had to reorganize. He put a lot of trust in people like Goring (good pilot, crappy Air Force commander) and Himmler, who failed as a chicken farmer. And so forth. But it’s all history.

      1. Funny, we were talking about this over at LSP’s place the other day. If Hitler had taken the Sudatenland and Austria, maybe even Alcase-Lorraine, and stopped, would we consider him ‘Evil’? Even if he killed the Jews and Gypsies and other undesirables, as long as he stayed where he was, within ‘Greater Germany’ would we see him as ‘big bad Fuhrer’?

Probably not. Nobody really bitched about the slaughter of the international socialists in Spain, or the Holomodor, or the Armenian Genocide or the Killing Fields or all the deaths associated with various movements by Mao or or or.

Even the Imperial Japanese, if they hadn’t attacked Pearl Harbor and gotten us involved, they might have gotten away with taking China, Manchuria and even parts of Siberia. There could have been a rather large Japanese Empire ruling over SE and NE Asia. But, no, stepped too far on too many toes and…

  11. That wasn’t Cha Cha’s was it? Re being lectured about historical events that you were present for, and the person (lecturer) gets it wrong- More than once! Mayaguez ‘rescue’ and K-219… sigh…

  12. that’s an interesting black box in the pic w/ the kitty. i wonder what’s in it. an mp5? personal nuclear device? or just a booby trap for idiots stupid enough to go snooping at the mine? the mind doth boggle. :)

  13. Volcanos don’t need to be “super” to have serious effects on weather. The sub surface Tonga eruption put cubic kilometers of water into the upper atmosphere. The eruption of a Pacific volcano in 1812 caused the “year without a summer” in 1813 New England.

    1. One of the major causes of the French Revolution wasn’t the obnoxiousness of the French aristocracy, it was Icelandic volcanoes that caused years of bad harvests and no harvests. Followed by price fixing of finished bread flour as an attempt to help the Parisian lower and middle classes that were being crushed under rapid inflation. Of course, the French government set prices so low that French farmers couldn’t make a profit (didn’t help that the French government raised taxes on the farmers… ) At the same time, cake flour (different wheat, different grind) was still available at an affordable price at a level the farmers could eck out a profit even with taxes. Thus the famously misunderstood “Let them eat cake.”

If you notice, the French government at the time, kings and all, were friggin… Leftists. Kind of national socialists. And got replaced by international socialists.
